Hello ---- and ----,
--- asked if I would pass on info about what we experienced last year at AEF (American Eagle Foundation) reagarding Frank and Indy's nest. Some of you may be familiar with this already.
Last year we were afraid that one or more of Indy's eggs would not be viable because the eggs went well past the usual "35-38" days that we all hear about. Not only was it odd because of the length of time. it took to hatch, Indy also behaved differently than before when laying her eggs.
Indy laid the first egg 3/24/12 and it looked like she rarely incubated. She laid the second egg on 3/27 and she incubated a little more but not by much. Eggs were left uncover a lot . The weather was fairly mild but did drop down into the rather chilly temps at night and she did not sit on them very much at night either. Last egg was laid on 3/31/12. It was only after the last egg was laid that she began incubating the eggs continuously.
We were all concerned that 1st and maybe even the 2nd egg would not be viable because she didn't do what we expected LOL. But as always, Eagles know what they are doing!!!
First egg hatched on 5/7 @ 12:06 am, and second egg on same day @ 1:40 am. then the third egg hatched on 5/8 @ 4:57am . So all 3 eaglets hatched within about 28 hrs of each other!!! I honestly don't know if there was any conversation on which egg was first to hatch but if you count from first laid to first hatch, it was 42 days. So the last one could have taken anywhere from 42-43 days to hatch.
I continue to be amazed by these Eagles. Compaired to most of you I am the newbie to watching and learning but feel blessed to have the opportunity to do so. Thanks so much for the support and great information!
