After a busy weekend, my daughter went home yesterday and my wife and son were going home this afternoon. We decided to go for a last boat ride before they left. Naturally, I can’t go out in the boat without stopping and seeing what the E’s are doing. We slowly circled the cove and didn’t see anything. Spotting the Juvies is a 40% visual thing and 60% listening to the sounds of the area. We started to hear squeeking off towards the nest, so we headed off in that direction. It almost sounded like they were in the nest, but I looked thru my camera and I didn’t see anything.
Then we see an E and a juvie sitting in a tree next to the water’s edge. This tree is at the bottom of the hill below the nest. The limbs they were on hung out over the water. I have been in this small area many times, it is a deep pool in the center with some shallow water around the edges. It’s not unusual to see fish swimming, if the water is clear. While I was taking this photo my wife spotted the other juvie on the opposite bank.
We were pretty far away, but we stopped and shut off the boat as not to disturb them. We watched for several minutes as all three just stood still. They were all three clearly watching something. The juvie on the shore was still squeeking every once in a while, so I will assume it might have been Ozark. I feel as though it was a fishing lesson in progress and it probably went something like this:
“Okay kids quiet down and pay attention.”
“Now, pick out a nice fish and concentrate on it. Don’t take your eyes off the fish.”
“Now kids, here is the hard part. See that guy out there in the boat that is always hanging around watching us? You need to watch your fish and at the same time watch that guy. As soon as he turns around jump down and pounce on that fish.”
About this time I turn around to see what the birds behind me were making a fuss about. They had been making a racket, but all the sudden they went into high gear. I thought perhaps the other E was coming in. My wife starts hitting me on the shoulder and says, “there he goes”, I hear a splash as I turn around and try to digest what’s going on. Holy cow he’s in the WATER!!! He took two swimming strokes with his wings before I got my camera up. My first shot is right as he gets to shore.
My second shot is as he jumps up on shore
Some jumping and flapping to get the water off.
A little head shake to get the water out of the ears.
“Now kids, except for the part where I missed the fish, that was perfect”
Despite his embarrassment, he held his head high and flew off.
Star was left wondering what he just witnessed and if it was a fishing, or swimming lesson.
Ozark stopped his squeeking for food when he saw there was no fish. He turned away from the water and walked off in discuss.
He later jumped up on a boat trailer and thru what only could be called a temper tantrum.
