The E’s are very devoted parents, but after 80+ days of sitting in the nest it looks like they have decided that their egg(s) aren’t going to hatch. Nobody knows what they will do with their free time this summer, but so far they have been staying in the area. I see both the E’s regularly both flying in the cove and hanging out in their favorite trees. Yesterday after checking the end of the cove and finding no E’s I was returning home when I spotted them circling high over the water next to the nest.
It was a windy day and they were barely flapping their wings as they circled in opposite directions. Around and around as they rode the thermals higher and higher. I watched them for 15 minutes until they got so high they were out of sight.
About 5:30 I went out again to take a look. I was idling by the nest when one swooped down, grabbed a fish and flew off to a tree.
This is the same tree that Star and Ozark used to hang out in. Photo from last summer.
I watched him eat the entire fish. From head to tail it took all of 8 minutes.
A messy eater, he wipes his beak on the tree.
I think he might need a bib also.
When he was done he flew off.
What do you do after eating a big meal? Get a drink of water and take a bath of course.
While waiting for the boat to raise up on the lift, Elsie flew in. Darn leaves!!
A bass boat had been working its way down the shore. Having reached the point with no bites, they decided to take off. Elsie must have been scared and she took off at the same time. They are going to be talking about that takeoff for a while because she scared the heck out of them. I should have taken their photo as the surprised driver swerved to miss the eagle that was 20 feet over his head, but out of habit I followed Elsie waiting till she popped out from behind the tree. Looks like she's a better fisherman than the people in the boat, but they do have a cool story to tell.
Early this morning I went to the end of the cove and again found one E sitting in a tree. I then drove about 6 miles by water to another area nest. With the leaves out you can no longer see the nest from the water, but one of the parents was sitting at the water’s edge.
Interesting how he hangs his wings down like he’s hot, but it was early in the morning and only about 62 degrees out.
An interesting photo, obviously he’s signaling to make a right turn. You also don’t see all four talons at one time very often.
I don’t know what’s up with the wing in the air thing. I don’t recall seeing an eagle with one wing up and one down before.
Getting ready to go.
The sun came out just as he took off.
When I returned home, I checked the end of the cove as usual and sure enough an E was still there.
This afternoon Linda and Ray stopped by and took me for a boat ride. We found both E’s sitting in the shade of a large tree. Remember Star and Ozark sitting together in the tree? I wonder where they learned to do that.
